One of the most repressive global regimes towards Palestine solidarity is Germany, which sees itself as having a “special responsibility” to support Israel in light of the Holocaust.

After banning pro-Palestine marches entirely last year following Israel’s killing of Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, Berlin police disbanded this year’s Nakba day rally after protesters chanted: “From the river to the sea”.

Police had previously warned organisers the rally would be cancelled if the chant was recited, on the grounds that it “denies Israel’s right to exist” and is therefore “not allowed in this country”.

On 11 October, Vienna police banned a Palestine demonstration on the grounds that the organisers had included the slogan in their invitations. They claimed “From the river to the sea” violates article 2 of the European convention on human rights, the right to life. Austria’s ruling rightwing Freedom party has one of the most hardline pro-Israel stances in the EU: the country was one of the swiftest in the bloc to suspend aid to Palestine following Hamas’ 7 October attack.

The UK is now making moves to follow suit. On 10 October, Suella Braverman wrote to the chief constables of England and Wales regarding recent events in Israel and Palestine.

“I would encourage police to consider whether chants such as “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free” should be understood as an expression of a violent desire to see Israel erased from the world,” she wrote, “and whether its use in certain contexts may amount to a racially aggravated section 5 public order offence.”

      GSbrder Nog steeds niet zo onder de indruk. En daarbij is antisemitisme wat anders dan antizionisme. Al snap ik ook wel dat dat bij een aardig deel samen zal gaan.

      Ik vind de neiging dit soort uitingen met repressie te lijf te gaan ook wel bijzonder. Wij waren in het westen toch zo tof, met onze vrijheid van meningsuiting? Rechts ging er toch zo praat op voorvechter te zijn van die Verlichtingsidealen? Of vinden we dat net wat minder belangrijk als de demonstranten richting het oosten bidden?

          Dat je je vrije mening mag uiten zonder vervolgd te worden betekent toch niet dat je werkgever het allemaal leuk moet vinden?

              janneke141 Dat betekent niet zomaar dat de mening die je uit grond voor ontslag is. Maar ik doelde natuurlijk op de reactie van verschillende overheden.

                  Het begint er overigens steeds meer op te lijken dat de ontploffing bij het ziekenhuis gisteravond om een afzwaaier vanuit Gaza ging. En er worden ook vraagtekens geplaatst bij het genoemde aantal slachtoffers door Bellingcat (nu in Nieuwsuur). Dat is op zichzelf positief (wat echt de waarheid is moet nog maar blijken), maar vraag is ook hoeveel het nu nog uitmaakt. In de Arabische wereld is de toon gezet.

                  Ik vraag me af of die claim van de Weense politie (ik neem aan dat ze het stadsbestuur bedoelen) stand houdt voor het Europese Hof van Justitie.

                              GSbrder Ik kan me prima voorstellen dat de organisatie van de demonstratie in Wenen het besluit van het stadsbestuur aanvecht, jij niet?

                                  remlof Ze kunnen het proberen. Er is waren in de Oostenrijkse rally wel meer burgerrechten in het gevaar waar je je twijfels kunt zetten. Zo is de Hamas-vlag verboden en is er een jongen gearresteerd omdat 'ie "Allahu Ahkbar" riep.

                                      GSbrder Dat de Hamas-vlag is verboden is logisch omdat Hamas door de EU als een terroristische organisatie is bestempeld. Maar het verbod op in het Arabisch "God is groot" roepen zou volgens mij ook geen stand houden voor het Europese Hof.

                                            Ben benieuwd naar de reactie van Wilders. Die is normaal niet zo van de dubbele paspoorten maar in dit geval…

                                              Ik hoop dat we ook nog wat paspoorten kunnen verstrekken aan Gazanen.
